benedict xvi decided it was time to step down. at a news conference minutes ago, the vatican saying the pope is not suffering from any specific disease. he just doesn't feel he has the strength to continue. and the pope has been thinking about resignation for a year. lots of names mentioned as possibilities to replace him. today, we have an idea of when the new pope will replace him. following developments live from vatican city. what have be learned in the news conference? >> reporter: good morning, john. in fact, father frederico lombardi is holding the news conference, and providing a few details. not a whole lot new. a few bits of information that are helping us to figure out what is going to happen here in the next few days. one of the things he said is that as you mentioned that there was no specific illness involved in the pope's decision to resign. he did say that the pope had had his pacemaker battery replaced recently. a normal operation, no problems. some of the italian press speculating that perhaps there was a problem with that operation. and another thing that they talked

conference from the vatican. the spokesman will hold that news conference and we'll bring that to you when it happens. earlier this morning pope benedict xvi met with more than 100 cardinals. they'll be the ones who will be choosing his replacement. he had a message for them. he'll share that in just a moment. here's how pope benedict xvi plans to spend the final hours of his papacy. at 10:45 a.m. eastern time he'll leave the vatican resident by helicopter and land a half an hour later at castel gandolfo, the papal summer residence. at 11:30 a.m., the pope is expected to appear at his balcony to say a final farewell to his followers. 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, pope benedict xvi will no longer be pope and st. peter's throne will be officially vacated. let's get right to cnn's chief international correspondent christiane amanpour who is live for us in rome this morning. we've given a rundown how the day will go. what can you add to that? >> reporter: well, you know, today was the day that the cardinals got to say goodbye to the pope and thank you. yesterday it was the pope in st. peter's squa

absolutely right. here i am near vatican swrar where they are handing out 50,000 tickets, putting up the risers and loud speakers. many catholics are expected to come here. you are absolutely right. this is an unprecedented situation. never in recent memory a pope emeritus. all of the details will need to be worked out. he will wear a simple white cossick after he steps down. in the meantime, the vatican has been in damage control mode. it wants to get past the scandals which have colored the beginning of this week. we know also you mentioned cardinal o'brien, he will not be coming, it is unprecedented that a cardinal will not come here to take part in the conclave to elect the next pope. he will not be coming because of these scandals. he referred to that fact when he himself resigned. yesterday, i spoke to a former dominican friar, a practicing roman catholic and also openly gay. he said it's well known there is a very large representation of gays in the catholic clergy. here is what he told me. >> having been a friar myself and having been openly gay catholic for the last 25 years

just in to cnn, a spokesperson for the vatican says pope benedict is considering issuing a decree that would move up the date of the conclave, that's where cardinals from around the world meet to choose the pope's successor. current church rules call for the conclave to start march 15th but this decree could speed up the process. the rules in place deals with a pope dying. with the pope not dying things could happen faster. >>> senator john mccain getting an earful at a town hall meeting near phoenix. >> this is an orwellian experience. i've had enough, sir. we've had enough. >> i retired -- >> we've had enough time. >> talking about his illegal immigration bill and some people in his home state are not happy. some residents called for strict deportation programs which mccain opposes. mccain is one of eight senators from both parties working on an immigration plan. he says the white house promised to cooperate. mccain an expert at town meetings, never a good idea to cross him there. >>> new york city residents with pistol permits can request their identities be removed from public reco
